Research Areas

The Unit of Real Estate Studies at RPTU specialises in real estate and facility management, in particular the digital transformation of business models, processes and business intelligence. The Team led by Prof. Dr. Björn-Martin Kurzrock develops solutions for the development and operation of sustainable neighbourhoods, buildings and components individually and with interdisciplinary research and practice partners. In doing so, the operating requirements of building owners as well as corporates are specifically taken into account.

We see building documentation and digital processing of documents with integration into business intelligence systems as the key to digitalised processes in real estate and facility management. For this purpose, we also develop algorithms based on machine learning together with partners from the IT sector in order to classify documents and extract relevant information for special use cases. Our expertise lies specifically in the selection, classification and prioritisation of documents and data as well as their linking and processing for specific use cases (e.g. life cycle costing/LCC, life cycle assessment, benchmarking, reporting, due diligence, sustainable project and portfolio development) in digital real estate and facility management.

We want to use the opportunities offered by digitalization in the construction and real estate sector to the best of our ability for all parties involved.

The unit is a member of the research initiative Regions and Cities at RPTU

Main aspects in our research projects are:

  • Digital building documentation and automated information extraction
  • Life cycle costing (calculation, simulation, documentation, due diligence)
  • Sustainable property development, corporate social responsibility
  • Knowledge transfer, incenctive systems and aspects of risk management
